Slab Culture

Slab is Houston's own language of car building, Slow, Loud And Bangin'. It grew out of the Fifth Ward, Third Ward and South Park, where hustlers and working men took Cadillac Fleetwoods, Eldorados and Lincoln Town Cars and turned them into rolling statements.

The formula got set early: a big body sitting level, candy paint laid deep enough to see through, a fifth wheel or continental kit on the back, and Texan wire wheels poked so far out the car takes up its own lane. Those wheels, 30-spoke Cragar star wires known as swangas, elbows and 84s, came off 1983 and 1984 Cadillacs, and the hunt for real ones became its own economy.

Robert Earl Davis Jr., DJ Screw, slowed records down until the whole city moved at his tempo. Chopped and screwed tapes were made for the car: the low end sits in the trunk, the vocals drag, and the ride matches the music. Screw tapes and slabs grew up together, and you could not have one without the other.

Out of his house on Greenstone came the Screwed Up Click: Fat Pat, Big Moe, Lil' Keke, E.S.G., Big Pokey, Big Hawk, Z-Ro, Trae tha Truth, Lil' Flip, Al-D, Mike D, Point Blank and Yungstar. Screwed Up Records & Tapes on W Fuqua still stands as the shop and the shrine, and DJ Screw Day every July brings the Cadillacs back out to the mural.

Ninety miles down the road in Port Arthur, Pimp C and Bun B built UGK into the voice of Texas. Pimp C's soul-loop production and country-rap tunes gave slab culture its swing, and songs like 'Front, Back & Side to Side' and 'Ridin' Dirty' are still the instructions for how a car should move.

Pimp C's own fleet became legend, candy Cadillacs and drop-tops with grain, gold and 84s, always photographed the way the songs sounded. When UGK linked with OutKast on 'International Players Anthem', the whole world heard what Houston and Port Arthur had been saying for a decade.

J. Prince's Rap-A-Lot Records gave Houston its first national platform, the Geto Boys, Scarface, Devin the Dude, Z-Ro and Yukmouth, and Rap-A-Lot's video sets put candy Cadillacs and gold wire in front of the country before anybody outside Texas knew what a slab was.

On the Northside, Michael '5000' Watts and OG Ron C built Swishahouse out of freestyle tapes and Sunday-night radio, launching Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, Mike Jones, Lil' Keke features and Archie Lee. Swishahouse ran on the same fuel as Screwed Up: slowed tapes cut for the car, and cars built for the tapes.

Houston put the cars in the lyrics until the cars became famous themselves. Lil' Keke's 'Southside', Fat Pat's 'Tops Drop', Big Moe's 'Barre Baby', Z-Ro's 'Mo City Don', 'Still Tippin'' with Mike Jones, Slim Thug and Paul Wall, and Paul Wall's 'Sittin' Sidewayz', the swangas, the drank and the poppin' trunk all got documented on record.

Paul Wall became slab culture's ambassador with grills and gold; Bun B, Z-Ro, Trae tha Truth, Devin the Dude, Scarface and the Geto Boys kept the Cadillacs in frame. Later, Beyoncé, Travis Scott, Megan Thee Stallion, Don Toliver and Maxo Kream carried Houston car imagery to new audiences, and out-of-town artists from Drake to A$AP Rocky filmed on Texas slabs.

Slabs are shop culture before they are rap culture. Houston painters mixing candy over gold base, upholstery men wrapping grain and buttoned leather, trunk builders framing plexi and neon around amps, and wheel men who can true a set of 84s, that is the trade the city passed down.

The swanga itself is a specialist craft: real 30-spoke Cragar star wires were only made for a few years, so builders restore, re-chrome, re-lace and gold-plate them, and shops like Texan Wire Wheels kept the standard alive. A finished car is judged by paint depth, poke, how level it sits, how clean the trunk reads and how hard it knocks.

The classics are body-on-frame American luxury: Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, Coupe DeVille, Sedan DeVille and Eldorado, plus the Lincoln Town Car and Continental. Big trunks, long doors and flat sides, the canvas the whole culture is built around.

Around them run the Buick LeSabre and Electra 225 'deuce and a quarter', Oldsmobile Delta 88 and Ninety-Eight, Chevrolet Caprice Classic and Impala, and the '73–'77 Monte Carlo and Cutlass. Newer builds put swangas on Chrysler 300s, Dodge Chargers, Crown Vics and even trucks, same rules, different body.

Houston never handed the culture off, it just added names. Travis Scott brought Astroworld imagery and candy paint back to a global audience, Megan Thee Stallion put H-Town in every corner of pop, and Don Toliver, Maxo Kream, Sauce Walka, Tobe Nwigwe, That Mexican OT and Monaleo all keep Cadillacs, swangas and screwed tempos in their videos.

Bun B stayed the city's anchor, Slim Thug and Paul Wall still roll out, and Trae tha Truth turned Trae Day into a citywide institution. Beyoncé's Texas records and Houston visuals pulled slab styling into fashion and country crossovers, and out-of-town artists keep coming here to shoot on real cars instead of props.

In 2026, Z-Ro brought 'Mo City Don' back with Drake on the feature, the Mo City anthem that defined a generation of screwed tapes, redone with the biggest name in rap riding on it. For Houston it landed as confirmation: the slab, the tempo and the neighborhoods that made them are still setting the standard, not being remembered.

Slab is still a family thing. Car clubs roll out weekly, shops trade swangas and grills, and builders pass down paint recipes and trunk layouts the way other cities pass down recipes for food.
