How to tell an authentic 1983-1984 Cragar 30-spoke star wire from a modern Texan Wire Wheels reproduction, written from the stand in our shop where both come through the door every week.
Cragar built a 30-spoke star wire wheel for two model years, 1983 and 1984. Houston took it, poked it out past the fender and made it the signature of the slab. Nothing else reads the same way from the curb: the crossed spokes throw light in a rosette, and the dish carries the wheel out into the street ahead of the paint.
Because production stopped four decades ago, every original set on the road has been traded, re-laced or re-plated at least once. That is what makes identification a skill rather than a glance, and it is why a fake commands the same photograph as the real thing until you pull the cap.

A true Cragar star wire carries 30 spokes per wheel laced in the star pattern that gives the wheel its name: crossed pairs that meet in a tight rosette at the hub rather than the even fan of a common 100-spoke wire. Count them cold, on the ground, from straight on. Sets advertised as swangas with 72, 80 or 100 spokes are wire wheels, not star wires, no matter how far they poke.

Pull the cap. Original 1983-1984 production hubs carry Cragar identification cast or stamped into the center section along with a date and part reference. Reproductions carry their own maker's marks, and a hub that has been ground flat, filled or wearing a stick-on emblem is the single loudest warning sign on the wheel. A seller who will not photograph the bare hub is telling you something.

Poke is geometry, not attitude. Measure from the mounting pad to the outer lip: the 84 dish runs deeper than the 83, and elbows are deeper still. Two wheels can wear the same cap and sit inches apart on the car. Measure all four before you buy, because mismatched dishes across an axle are common in resold sets and cannot be corrected without re-lacing.

Original chrome from 1983-1984 has had four decades to lift. Look for pitting at the spoke nipples, rust bloom where spoke meets rim, and hazing inside the dish where water sat. None of that kills a set, it prices it: a clean-hub original with tired chrome is a restoration candidate, while a mirror-bright wheel on a suspect hub is usually a reproduction with a good polisher behind it.

Spin each wheel on a stand. Wire wheels go out of true and lose spoke tension with age, and a set that runs out at the lip will never sit right under a big body no matter how good the paint above it is. Tap the spokes: they should ring evenly. Dead, dull spokes mean loose nipples and a re-lace in your future.

Original swangas move through Houston hands, and the good sets come with a history: who ran them, what car, who plated them, who re-laced them. Reproductions have no such story and do not need one. Ask for it anyway. A straight answer on where a set came from is worth as much as any stamp under the cap.
Neither answer is wrong. Originals are period-correct and finite; the Houston-made reproduction is the wheel most working slabs ride on. Know which one you are paying for.
Poke is set by dish and adapter together. Run too much without correcting the suspension and you eat wheel bearings, chew fender lips and lose the stance you paid for. We set poke against ride height and tire profile so the car turns lock to lock clean and still reads right standing still.
Keep them alive with the boring things: torque the adapters on a schedule, wash the salt and brake dust out of the spoke nipples, and re-true the set after any curb strike. Chrome forgives nothing once water gets behind it.
